Inspiration

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

It’s funny how people react when they hear that I’m a musician AND a designer, or vice versa. To me, the two are so closely related because they both rely soley on one key word: Inspiration. Whatever moves you, motivates you, or just determines you to keep going – that’s what will make the difference. Once I get inspired, the best songs start flowing. In the same way, once I establish what my client is after, I can effortlessly churn out the most complex of designs.

Sometimes I’ve tried to force inspiration. Deadlines can hover over your head, and force you to lean on your own experience and logic. I’ve learned to not force the thing which I cannot control. There will be blocks. Wait for inspiration, pray it comes sooner than later, but DO wait for it. It’s worth it.

Self-Promotion for the Creative Person

Monday, May 11th, 2009

At the 2008 HOW Creative Freelancer Conference, Lee Silber presented different ways to market and to stay motivated as a solopreneur*. After his motivating presentation I jumped to get his book, “Self-Promotion for the Creative Person: Get the Word Out About Who You Are and What You Do.”

Self-promotion is one of the most difficult things a creative person must do. It is also the most critical. Open this book to any page and chances are you will find something that can help you overcome this hurdle and get the attention and recognition you and your talents deserve. -Product Description

Tumblr your way to the top

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Ignore the silly title of this blog. What is this Tumblr stuff, why is it different, and most importantly – WHY SHOULD I CARE!??!!?? Well, your questions are vaild. I get annoyed each time I hear “this is the new …” We’re inundated with (anti) social networking tools nowadays that truly avoid social interaction, and make us less productive most of the time.

My aim is to introduce you to a cool technology that makes blogging easier than checking your email, and gives you the networking capabilities of facebook – all for free! Let’s face it, we all have something unique to say.

Tumblr makes it effortless to share text, photos, quotes, links, music, and videos, from your browser, says the website. There are also cool tools to make your experience even more streamlined. For example, a tumblelog is a variation of a blog that favors short-form, mixed-media posts over the longer editorial posts frequently associated with blogging.

Finally, let’s talk about networking. This is unique because I can be directly linked to highly influential people, and give them a window back into getting to know me more. I am currently “following” most of my heroes, and there’s always that chance that they’ll follow me right back. Pretty cool!

Tables, really?

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Tables existed in HTML for one reason: To display tabular data. But then border=”0″ made it possible for designers to have a grid upon which to lay out images and text. Still the most dominant means of designing visually rich Web sites, the use of tables is now actually interfering with building a better, more accessible, flexible, and functional Web. Find out where the problems stem from, and learn solutions to create transitional or completely table-less layout.

My goal here is not to point fingers at those sticking to what they know – but more to show you some other areas of a CSS compliant website that help your business out in ways you don’t necessarily realize. The facts are clear, a table-free website will:

  • Make your pages load faster
  • Lower your hosting costs
  • Make your redesigns more efficient and less expensive
  • Help you maintain visual consistency throughout your sites
  • Get you better search engine results
  • Make your sites more accessible to all viewers and user agents and give you a competitive edge (that is, job security) as more of the world moves to using Web standards.

Some people have seemingly valid arguments against CSS, but rest assured, modern browsers are much better at rendering Web standards and we don’t need to use these archaic methods any more.

Instead of nesting tables within tables and filling empty cells with spacer GIFs, we can use much simpler markup and CSS to lay out beautiful sites that are faster to load, easier to redesign, and more accessible to everyone.

Wordpress for Small Business

Wordpress

Everyone wants control. Everyone wants cost effective. Lately I’ve been telling lots of clients about a great solution called Wordpress. Ideally, everyone would be able to afford the biggest and best content management system (CMS) that looks, feels and acts as big as the dreams of their company. In these times, some small business owners are so broke that they can’t even afford to pay attention. Sorry, bad joke, there will be lots of those in my columns.

Why Wordpress? Wordpress is a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. In other words, WordPress bridges the gap between the boring static website on the early 2000’s and a full, robust CMS while giving you key areas that you have complete control over, all within a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. Think of it like a car, all you have to do is put gas in it and it’s ready for the information superhighway. Once again, bad joke. In the typical Uniglory/Wordpress setup we’ll get to know your brand, mock up what the site will look like (just like any website we do) build it for you, and give you the reins. No html, just a log in and a blog style editor. Simple stuff! You get a smart, low cost, effective, google compliant website – and noone knows that it’s Wordpress!

Sometimes, you have to pay a bit less, but I assure you – It’s worth it.
