Inspiration

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

It’s funny how people react when they hear that I’m a musician AND a designer, or vice versa. To me, the two are so closely related because they both rely soley on one key word: Inspiration. Whatever moves you, motivates you, or just determines you to keep going – that’s what will make the difference. Once I get inspired, the best songs start flowing. In the same way, once I establish what my client is after, I can effortlessly churn out the most complex of designs.

Sometimes I’ve tried to force inspiration. Deadlines can hover over your head, and force you to lean on your own experience and logic. I’ve learned to not force the thing which I cannot control. There will be blocks. Wait for inspiration, pray it comes sooner than later, but DO wait for it. It’s worth it.

Did You Know?

My brother sent me this video and found it pretty impressive. It is crazy to think how technology is expanding. The fact about how half of the stuff college students learn in their first year of study is outdated by their third year is soooooo TRUE!

J.J. Abrams on the Magic of Mystery

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Wired magazine teams up with J.J. Abrams for the May issue. Look in on the creative process with J.J. and the edit and design teams.

I found this video incredibly inspiring. I love seeing people get excited about projects they are working on. I think more magazines should have guest editors that take over one issue a year.

Paul Rand

Paul Rand (1941-1996) is one of my favorite graphic designers. His simplistic Swiss style is very inspiring. I always find myself reading one of his books or watching a youtube video.  Here are some of his great quotes:

“Don’t try to be original, just try to be good.”

“Art is an idea that has found its perfect form.”

“Language of form: order, variety, contrast, symmetry, tension, balance, scale, texture, space, shape, light, shade and color.”

whitehouse.gov

Remember when government websites were such a headache to find information or to even look at? Thanks to President Obama, the whitehouse.gov website has had an extreme makeover! If you haven’t seen it yet, stop reading this and go look at it.

The new features include a weekly video address and blog which emphasizes the new administration’s promises of openness. It is really cool to see how the internet can start closing the gap between society and the government. I am so pumped about this! Change feels + looks soooooo good!

Sol Sender – Obama Logo Design

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Part 1 of 2 Creative director Sol Sender tells the story of conception and birth of the Obama 08 logo, including the strategy behind it, developmental concepts and finalist designs for the identity not chosen by the campaign. …

It is safe to say that most designers grew a quick fascination with the Obama campaign. I found this video very inspiring and I loved seeing the development of this successful symbol. Enjoy!
